Enoch-2699399, Is He Good Enough?

Advertise | AdChoices

This is an attempt to have Enoch-2699399 officially recognized for his contributions to Newsvine as a Random Act of Vineness.

In my opinion, Enoch has written countless articles, most of which enabled us, as Viners, to meet, communicate, understand, appreciate, and respect one another.

The topics which Enoch raised for discussion were presented and moderated in such a way as to foster and promote the commonality we all share as humans. The manner in which Enoch moderated his articles incouaraged self-respect and the respect for others in all matters.

I feel that Enoch should be thanked for what he has done for us and the best way to do that is by nominating him for the Random Act of Vineness.

Please remember to take the "Poll".

Not to take anything away from Enoch, who is a great Viner, but the purpose of the RAV is not to reward someone for being a good viner.

It's given for one moment of greatness above and beyond what a great viner always does. Hence, Random Act of Vineness.

If RAVs were awarded to great Viners, there would have been hundreds given out over the years, and there are many people who would qualify now.

Please notice that every RAV on this page was given for a single act.

Not to take anything away from the RAV recipients but the following statement on the page of your link....

consistent publishing of quality, original articles and dedication to productive discussion and community building.

applies completely to Enoch, so why should he not be considered?

Here is the sated purpose of the award, from that page:

Following is a historical record of all Random Acts of Vineness recognized by Newsvine for exceptional moments of greatness within the community.

Not all Acts are created equal, of course, and no one should assume that any item on this list is any more or less important than any other item. The list is simply a way of documenting some of the outstanding things achieved by members of the Newsvine community. It could be helping a charitable cause, writing a wildly popular article, developing a tool to better use Newsvine, or a host of other things. If you'd like to nominate a fellow Newsvine member for a Random Act of Vineness, please contact us.

The award, by definition, is for an act. Enoch is a great Viner. No dispute there. But over the years there have been many great Viners who were not awarded an RAV because they didn't have that one shining moment of greatness. Actually, there were quite a few who did have that one shining moment, were nominated, but not given the award, and there are people on that list who could easily have had more than one RAV, but weren't awarded it when many thought they deserved it.

Dennis, thanks for stopping by. If you want to vote "No", that is fine by me. Everything you say could very well be true, but I have arrived at a different interpretation of what does and what does not qualify.

It could be helping a charitable cause, writing a wildly popular article. developing a tool to better use newsvine, or a host of other things.

I consider that the unity and understanding within the Newsvine community that Enoch has developed and nurtured has reached a level that should not be ignored.

Perhaps we should wait to determine the value of Enoch's contribution posthumously when there will be no further contributions. However, I fell that I know enough already. If I am wrong, so be it.

Actually, I didn't vote either way. I like Enoch, and think he's a great Viner, and I can see him someday earning an RAV. I'm just pointing out the purpose of the thing, and it's not to reward people for being really good Viners. After all, we're all supposed to be really good Viners.

I consider that the unity and understanding within the Newsvine community that Enoch has developed and nurtured has reached a level that should not be ignored.

And I agree, though I have to say, he's not the first. There have been many people here whom you would have felt exactly the same about, had you known them.

Perhaps we should wait to determine the value of Enoch's contribution posthumously when there will be no further contributions

Hopefully that won't happen. Hopefully he won't leave. But that's sort of my point...the RAV isn't about a Viner's overall contribution. It's about a moment of greatness.

Hell, Walt D liveblogged from the middle of a forest fire. He refused to leave, despite the fire fighters trying everything to get him out of there. He stayed with his house during the biggest forest fire in California's history...and yet found time to keep us all updated on the events as they occurred!

Killfile reported live from Virginia Tech while the shooter was walking around shooting people.

That's dedication. Or maybe just crazy.

I've been nominated 7 times that I know of, and won only once. They (Newsvine) don't take that award lightly. If they did, it might diminish the accomplishments for which it was awarded in the past.

What we really need are more awards. There should be an award for overall contribution, but the RAV isn't it.

There seems to be a double standard here. The quote I posted above is the only description from your link for that particular recipient of the RAV, there was no "one shining moment" mentioned, no "heroic deed", no "life on the line" type of action. I think we're on an uneven playing field here and the rules should either be clearer or adhered to in all cases.

I posted the explanation of what the RAV is for from the top of the page. I don't know where your quote came from, though I assume it was from one of the RAV winners descriptions.

If that's the case, and if that was the whole description, it doesn't seem to meet the criteria, or measure up to the other entries on the page. Was it a partial description or something?

I think it was from my RAV, Dennis. At the time I received the RAV, several of my articles had been picked up by MSNBC. I wrote a lot about bottled water, and water supplies, which is what I know best-- but had to stop since my company preferred that their spokes-person represent them.

However, I did host a VineMeet, and other things, too. If you felt that I didn't measure up to the criteria, perhaps you could take it up with Tyler and Sally. I mean no disrespect by saying that, at all. :-)

Hope you have a great day!

I appreciate his perspective on issues, and have enjoyed commenting on articles he's posted. I'm not absolutely sure if he should receive this award or not, and that by my limited contact with him, but I trust my friend AL-316, and know that he is not given to hysterics, or delusions of grandeur. Yet my limited contact with Enoch, commenting on articles he's posted, I've found him to be insightful (yes, I mean insightful) and have a certain wisdom. When AL-316 says Enoch deserves this award, I believe him.

Ah, I see. That's always been a bit of a problem with the Wall of Vineness page. The descriptions often don't live up to the accomplishment, because they're trying to get it all into one sentence, or maybe two short ones. None of the things on that page sound as impressive as they really were.

If you felt that I didn't measure up to the criteria, perhaps you could take it up with Tyler and Sally. I mean no disrespect by saying that, at all. :-)

No, not at all. As I said, the descriptions often seem to minimize the actual accomplishment. Trying to be brief, I guess.

Someday, I'm going to be able to write more about water... But, until I retire, (2055?) I can't write what I would like to write, or what I know. My job buys my medicine, so I can live, to be able to work, to make more money, to buy more medicine. :-)

Take care!

I'm not especially fond of how the RAV is either...but it is what it is..

and this is how I voted:

Best Article Jay's Diner Foursome - Always thoughtful and entertaining Best Author Enoch- His articles and those with co-writers are well written Best Seed bore-head brought to our attention the massive problems facing US fishermen Best Moderator Dennis P McMann - his moderating is well known, I can't add to it :) R.A.V. nominee Carloz - He has 'gone the distance since 2008, seeding, moderating, and often taken for granted but we would really miss him if he ever left NV. I especially think Carloz should get the RAV. He crosses genre's with his seeds, something for everyone. :))

And that's the truth....poets too. ps, I finished another one too. :)

If the RAV requires a single act that stands out, they Enoch is qualified. He did an article on a young First Nations boy that was assaulted by a teacher. His e mail and letter campaign and involving American Indian tribes resulted in the Canadian Ministry of Education changing their policy regarding First Nation children.

THAT qualifies him for the award, PERIOD.....

You all put forth valid points. It is interesting to note, however, the individual or committee that makes the decision does not contribute any comments or offer suggestions to our discussion here. We are left to our own devises.

One of us, in our view could be right, or we all could be wrong. I have seen other attempts fail without an explanation. I am hoping this attempt is different. Different enough to be successful.

Al and Grisham, I have already written to Newsvine regarding the RAV. I neglected to include a reference to the Canadian Ministry of Education policy change brought on by Kavika and Enoch. I would recommend that either one of you, or everybody for that matter, write to NV and point out the policy changes made because of their efforts here on NV.

Maybe that would help.

Let me start by saying I got an email from AL-316 asking me to comment on an article with no clue what it might be. The appreciation for another contributor is admirable & presumably I was enlisted to support a worthy nominee. My comment isn't a randomly selective opportunity to address the topic of rankings and recognition, but now that I'm here you can get my honest opinion.

I agree with the points made by Dennis McCann's in #1.15 but would take it farther. No way! To award someone with 54 articles, zero seed and no remarkable events would be a real slap in the face to so many, including me, who have contributed more for much longer, simply as part of the Newsvine community.

IMO, this is an unconscionable comment. One should be able to vote their mind without concerns about being called names. Reported as inflammatory.

While Enoch, a friend of mine, may well deserve the nomination and possibly the RAV, there may be some that have reservations. Ie; his length of time as a member, his total number of contributions and as Dennis points out in #1.13, the lack of focus on a particular act.

Keep in mind, that of the many hundreds of Viners that have made substantial contributions to Newsvine, only 25 have been singled out for this honor.

I wish Enoch good luck with the voting, and commend AL for his gracious nomination.

Whoa-- wait a second here Jerry Verlinger!

Some people are arguing that he doesn't deserve it because the nomination is based on his overall contributions, and that the RAV is pnly for"a random act of Vineness". Act-- singular. One contribution.

.In other words-- the RAV should only be awarded for one single exceptional act. One.

And now you are arguing that he shouldn't get it because of the low # of total contributions!

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here-- do you think that it must be based only on 1 exemplary contribution and not total number-- or are you saying we should take into account not only 1 contribution but also the "total contributions? ("total" meaning more than 1).

Or is there really some other factor at play here...?

While Enoch, a friend of mine, may well deserve the nomination and possibly the RAV, there may be some that have reservations.

1. I'm not sure i see why the fact that he is a friend of yours would have any relevancy as to whether or not he is nominated...???

2. He may deserve it-- and some people may have reservations?

So what?

Have you ever seen this sort of discussion (that is, when it involved more than just 2 or 3 people) where everyone was in agreement?

I suppose one could also say that he doesn't deserve it-- but that there are some 'Viners who feel that he does!!!

Whoa-- wait a second here Jerry Verlinger!

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here

Obviously.

Where in my comment did I say he should not get the RAV?

My comment is in response to #3.2 by Andrew that had something to say about a negative vote, and I was simply pointing out some of the things that may cause people to have reservations and cast a no vote.

If you bothered to go to the link provided by Dennis and read the reasons the 25 RAVs were bestowed, you might have understood what I am trying to say.

Receiving an RAV is not a result of a popularity contest. They are given as a reward for performing a Random ACT of Vineness. Not necessarily one act or one article, but a focus on one particluar issue, topic, incident or series of events.

I'm not sure i see why the fact that he is a friend of yours would have any relevancy as to whether or not he is nominated..

It doesn't. It has relevancy to my comment. I wanted to make it clear I don't have anything against Enoch.

I repeat what I said in #3.12 "I wish Enoch good luck with the voting, and commend AL for his gracious nomination."

Oh. OK

Sorry, I misunderstood what you said.

Actually I did. But i was thinking that just because that was the way it was done previously wouldn't necessarily mean that that couldn't be changed.

I am not trying to create a haze over how someone is considered worthy of a RAV, but when I look at the justifications for the previous 26 RAVs, I conclude that it is awarded in recognition of an accomplishment which in some way improves Newsvine or the image of Newsvine.

I observe some instances where a series of acts resulted in final accomplishment. In any case, the decision is not mine to make. Only the decision to nominate Enoch is mine.

My view is that Enoch is worthy of a RAV because of his continued and repeated efforts to bring to Newsvine a sense of unity and acceptance for one another which transcends race, religion, gender, social, economic, cultural, political, and educational differences.

This was never intended to be a popularity contest or a comparative analysis. I personally invited individuals who I knew don't see eye to eye with Enoch on many issues. This was intended to reflect an honest cross section of vine members and how they view Enoch's contribution and whether it was positive or negative.

Judge for yourself. Does Enoch fit into this group? I think he does. For one of his articles? Maybe. For his cumulative articles? Definitly.

Well, I think he deserves it, naturally-- Enoch never hesitates to contact the individual and offer help-- a fact which may go unnoticed by a lot of viners, but is very noticed by those who are struggling with heartbreak.

I think Enoch's articles on chaplaincy have helped all of us-- either in dealing with our own problems, or in helping others.

One of the main arguments of the naysayers here is that the RAV is for a notable single act-- rather than ongoing efforts. However, some of the previous RAVs were not for a single act either. Like Enoch, they were for the quality of an ongoing presence, and the effect it had. For example:

January 25, 2008 — lauhal was awarded the Random Act of Vineness for her tireless efforts fighting spam and malicious behavior on the Vine.

That's certainly not a case of "a single act of Vineness". Really-- did she do something extraordinary against spam on one occasion only? Of course not-- it was her ongoing efforts over time that earned her the RAV!

The are other examples on the list, but I'm not going to spend times looking for them and copy and pasting them.

Not to take anything away from Enoch, who is a great Viner, but the purpose of the RAV is not to reward someone for being a good viner.

It's given for one moment of greatness above and beyond what a great viner always does. Hence, Random Act of Vineness.

Well-- in that case-- would you therefore start a campaign to have lauhal's RAV taken away? That would certainly be foolish-- she certainly deserved it.

Since the award winning efforts were for noteworthy conduct over time (as is the case with Enoch!)-- and not merely a single act-- then she doesn't meet the requirements which you are (mistakenly) claiming to be true!

???

Yes.....only ONE random act per person please. We don't want to start becoming too nice. Some of us might start believing in our fellow man again and that would just be terrible. Keep your good acts to a minimum people! lmao

While I support any nomination for a RAV, I wanted to point out some of the concerns AL may run into with this particular nomination.

Actually Enoch does do a lot of good work on the Vine and his nomination is certainly deserved, as he obviously has a lot of supporters, but whether he gets the RAV or not will be determined by many additional factors that his supporters have no control over.

"I sent a FR, he ignored my request and sent me one...."

He may not have "ignored" your FR. The "Join In" link doesn't always work, and you have to send a FR back instead.

The same thing sometimes happens with the "Accept/Reject" link for the "Request for Membership" in a group.

Then, I intend to nominate him myself and use the polling results as supporting evidence that I am not alone. I am trying to make it easy for the Newvine folks to give Enoch his due. Maybe this approach will work.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Newsvine.

Be sure to go to the Random Acts of Vineness page, click on contact us and write why you feel Enoch is deserving of this recognition.

Subject: Random Act of Vineness nomination for Enoch-2699399.

http://enoch2699399.newsvine.com/

Whether you realize it or not, Enoch is Newsvine's Chaplain. His efforts to provide spiritual guidance, comfort and humor to those who wander Newsvine's pages is steadfast. A quick look at his column page articles and the wealth of his kind and enlightening responses is enlightening. There is no doubt in my mind that Enoch strives with every article to make Newsvine a better, more human, kind, loving and compassionate place to explore and learn. Often, his articles are written with a co-author who may not share his faith but who does share and recognize the basic things that make us human.

He has personally helped me through a rough spot and I came to realize that he had more to offer than most who claim to offer.

Thank you for your consideration, grump in NM

I'm in! Enoch is one of, if not THE best person on Newsvine! He is loving, kind, intelligent and understanding. His compassion truly seems endless, yet he can turn almost anything into deliciously digestable humor. No heartburn from Enoch, only heartGLOW! :-)

Agreed...

If anyone deserves it-- its Enoch! :-)

(Besides all he's done to make the 'Vine a better place-- he's also been a role model for others. And the importance of that should not be underestimated!!!)
